I had realised that
College had taken its toll of theatre going this year, but only now, writing
this list out, can I
see just how much! I'm afraid I make little apology for the dominance of
the National in this list, but Peter Hall aside, the rest of London's theatre is
a bit grim. At
the national you get the best acting and (generally) the best direction and
(with luck) at £ 10 a seat. A typical example was man of Mode, a fantastic
version of a restoration comedy, updated, relevant,
sexy, vibrant, brilliant fun and deeply thought-provoking. And all for £
10. Almost as good was Kneehigh's production of a theatrical version of A
Matter of Life and Death. Very theatrical, challenging and finally deeply
moving. But in the end it was the year of St Joan, the year when the National
brought GBS in from the cold and turned Ann Marie Duff into a superstar.
We only saw it twice, but we could easily have seen it more than that.
